THE INDIAN STRUGGLE

The history of the Indian struggle for freedom in the modern era cannot be understood without first comprehending the psychological climate of India in the years immediately following the Great War (1914–1918). To the superficial observer, the British Empire appeared more invincible than ever. It had emerged victorious from a global conflagration, crushing the challenge of German militarism. Yet, beneath this veneer of imperial strength, the foundations of British rule in India were beginning to crack not from external military pressure, but from a profound shift in the consciousness of the Indian people.
